Set up your Google Nest or Home speaker or display

The Google Home app will walk you through the steps to set up your Google Nest or Home speaker or display. This article covers the setup process for the following devices:

Speakers

  • Google Home
  • Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)
  • Google Home Mini (1st gen)
  • Google Home Max
  • Google Nest Audio

Displays

  • Google Nest Hub
  • Google Nest Hub Max
If you want to set up a different device, you can find the instructions in Set up smart devices in the Google Home app.

What you need to get started​

  • A speaker or display.
  • Latest version of the Google Home app.
  • Latest version of the Google app.
  • Google Account.
  • A mobile phone or tablet that:
    • Has Android 6.0 or later.
    • Works with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi network (a WPA-2 Enterprise network won’t work).
    • Has Bluetooth turned on.
  • An Internet connection and secure wireless network.
  • If you already use Duo for video calling, make sure that you use the same Google Account in Duo and in the Google Home app.

Get started

Use the guided setup tool or follow the instructions below.

  1. Plug in your speaker or display.
  2. On your phone or tablet, open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Tap the Add icon   Set up device plus  New device  follow the in-app steps.
    1. If the Set up devices button is not on the screen:
      1. To set up your first device in the Home app, tap Get started  Set up new devices  Create another home  Next  enter a home nickname and address.

      Note: You’ll need to enter a nickname, but you can choose not to enter your address.

      1. To set up all other devices, at the top left, tap the Add icon   Set up device plus  New device.
      2. Follow the remaining steps.
  4. You’ll be able to opt out of some settings, like Voice Match or personal results. You can change these settings at any time after you complete setup.

Fix issues during set up

Speaker or display doesn’t appear in the Google Home app

Restart your speaker or display

  1. Unplug your device.
  2. Wait for 10 seconds, then plug it back in.

Restart the Home app

  1. Close the Home app Google Home appLearn how to close apps.
  2. Open the Home app Google Home app.

Setup freezes or can’t finish

Restart your speaker or display

  1. Unplug your device.
  2. Wait for 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
  3. Start the setup process again.
