Delete and remove access to Google Nest devices

Delete and remove access to Google Nest devices

There are a few different ways you can remove the connection between your Google Account and your Google Nest and Google Home devices and services:

  • Delete a home: Removes the home itself as well as the devices, services, and data associated with that home.
  • Remove yourself or others from a home: Unlinks the selected account(s) from your home and devices.
  • Remove specific devices from a home: Keeps your home set up with your other devices and services, but removes the device you want to remove.

Delete a home

You can delete a home from the Home app if you’re the only home member.

If you aren’t the only member of a home, you’ll first need to remove all other members from the home by using the Google Home app. Otherwise, you’ll only be able to remove yourself from the home, and the remaining home members will still have access to the home and its devices.

When you delete a home:

  • The home is removed from your Google Account.
  • You won’t be able to use the Home app to control devices you added to this home, including lights, displays, speakers, cameras, thermostats, and locks, unless you set those devices up again in a new home.
  • Data associated with the home, such as video history from Nest cameras you might own or thermostat settings, is deleted. Note: Data associated with your Google Account is not deleted if you delete your home. Learn how to remove data associated with your account.

To delete a home:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

When you delete Voice Match for your Nest Hub Max, it’ll also permanently delete Face Match for the same device, and your Assistant will no longer be able to recognize your voice or give you personal results on these devices.

Share a home and devices in the Google Home app

Share a home and devices in the Google Home app

Important: If you use the Nest app, and haven’t migrated to a Google Account, you manage homes and people who share access to your home with the Nest app.

To organize and manage your devices in the Google Home app, you can create a home. Then you can invite home members, who will share control of the home and its devices.

For example, you could put your grouped living room speakers, your office lights, and your thermostat into a home, and invite your family to be members of that home.

Create and manage a home

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. At the top, tap Add Add.
  3. Tap Create new home.
  4. Follow the steps.

Switch between homes

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. At the top, tap the name of the current home.
  3. Select a new home from the drop down. If the drop down button doesn’t appear, you only have one home in the Home app.

Note: Not all devices can be moved to a different home this way. Speakers and displays, and Chromecast can be moved, excluding Nest Wifi point and Nest Hub Max. Some Nest and Wifi devices can’t be moved to a different home. You’ll need to factory reset your device and set it up again in a new home.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. Open the home the device is in.
  3. Tap the device and then Settings Settings and then Device information and then Home.
  4. Tap the home you want to move the device to and then Next and then Move device.
  5. If asked, tap the room you want to move the device to and then Next.

  2. Switch to the home you want to delete.

Create commands to control online services & devices

Create commands to control online services & devices

You can create your own commands for your Google Assistant using IFTTT. See services and devices you can control.

IFTTT is a separate company from Google. The name stands for 「If this, then that.」

For example, if you say:

  • 「It’s time to wake up,」 then your automated coffee maker turns on
  • 「Tell my friends I’m going sailing,」 then a status update is posted to your social network

Together, your custom phrase and action is called an Applet. To create an IFTTT Applet or use ones that other people have created, follow the steps below.

Get started

  1. Go to IFTTT.com.
  2. If you haven’t already, sign in or sign up.
  3. At the top right, click Search. Search for 「Google Assistant.」
  4. Click Google Assistant Assistant and then Connect.
  5. Choose a Google Account to give IFTTT access to. Make sure to choose the account you used to set up Google Home or the Google Assistant on your phone.

Browse, create, or edit Applets

Browse other people’s Applets

To use an Applet that someone else created:

  1. Go to IFTTT.com.
  2. At the top, click Search. Search for 「Google Assistant.」
  3. Click Google Assistant Assistant.
  4. You’ll find Applets created by others. To add an Applet to your list, click it and then Turn on.
  5. IFTTT may ask you to give permissions to another service before using the Applet. Review the request before giving permission.
  6. Optional: Edit the Applet.
  7. Click Save. The Applet will be added to My Applets.
Create an Applet

Step 1: Create a phrase

Create one or more phrases you want to use to trigger an action from your Google Assistant.

    • Enter up to 3 ways to say your phrase.
    • In the last field, enter what you want your Assistant to say in response to your phrase.

    • Delete the Applet: Click Configure Settings. Scroll down, then click Delete.

Fix an Applet that isn’t working

If an Applet isn’t working, you likely have an issue with your device settings.

To fix the issue:

  • Repeat your phrase. Speak clearly and naturally.
  • See if you’re using one of the phrases you’ve added to your Applet. If there’s only one phrase in your Applet, try adding other ways of saying the same phrase. Follow these steps to find or edit an Applet.
