Google Home and Assistant commands: Here are the ones you need to know

Google Nest Mini on purple table

So you just got your new Google Home or Google Assistant device. Now you’re probably wondering what to do with it. From controlling your connected lights to getting information about your favorite actor, Google Assistant can do a lot.

While there are thousands of different things you can ask your new smart speaker or phone, we’ll do our best to round up the ones you need to know. Here’s a look at some of the most important Google Home and Google Assistant commands.

First thing’s first: If you want to get your Google Assistant device’s attention just say “OK Google” or “Hey Google.”

Oh, and even if both your Android phone and Google Home hear you, only one of your devices will be triggered. This is a really good move on Google’s part.

Google Home commands for controlling the device

  • To turn up the volume on your Google Home, you can say: “Hey Google, increase volume”, “Hey Google, turn it up” or “Hey Google, increase volume to maximum.”

Using IFTTT with Google Home

If you have a favorite app or service that’s not yet supported by Google Home, you might be in luck. Google Home is also compatible with IFTTT, the popular automation service. This means you can possibly hook up an app or service that doesn’t have support yet. For instance, Twitter doesn’t have Google Assistant support yet. However, you can still ask Google Assistant to post something to Twitter, as long as you have IFTTT set up. The same thing goes for other apps – want to add a task to Todoist? Just set it up in IFTTT, and Google Assistant will be able to add tasks whenever you ask it to.

For a full list of IFTTT channels compatible with Google Assistant, head here.

Remark: OK Google command.

The complete list of 『OK, Google』 commands

There’s a lot you can tell your Android phone to do. Yes, even 「take a selfie.」

With Google Now, you can use voice commands to create reminders, get help with trivia questions, and, yes, even find out 「what does the fox say?」

And, with the recent update from Google, the voice assistant’s reponse will sound more natural than ever. (Though, of all the voice assistants, Google Now was already the most natural-sounding one.)

If you can’t get enough of talking to your phone (or your Android Wear watch), we put together a long list of OK, Google commands to help you get more done with just your voice.

Editors』 Note: This post was originally published in March, 2016 and has since been updated to include newly discovered commands.

OK, Google

There are two ways to say a command.

  • With newer Android devices, just say 「OK Google,」 followed by a question or task. For example, if I wanted to know the weather, I could say 「OK Google, what’s the weather like today?」 and a few seconds later Google Now would provide the forecast.
  • Tap on the microphone button in the Google search bar, and skip the 「OK, Google」 portion of the conversation. If the search bar isn’t on a home screen, swipe right from the primary home screen to see Google Now.

If 「OK, Google」 isn’t working for you, make sure that feature is enabled. Head to the Google Now app, go to Menu > Settings > Voice > 「OK Google」 detection.

Use 「Hey Google」 voice searches & actions

You can use your voice to do actions like search, get directions, and create reminders. For example, to see if there’s rain in the weather forecast, say, 「Hey Google, do I need an umbrella tomorrow?」

The (almost) complete list of Google commands

We searched high and low for a complete list of 「OK Google」 commands, but came up short. So we put one together ourselves. Below is a list of commands we have verified work on Android. Odds are it’s not entirely complete, since Google did not share one with us — we asked.

If you know of a command missing from our list, please leave a comment and we will be sure to included it.

The basics

  • Open [app name]. Example: 「Open Gmail.」

Google learns some of your preferred apps

When you don’t mention the app name for some requests (for example, you say only “scan my receipt”), you can open the app from the search results. After you do this a few times, Google learns that you want to open the app and won’t ask again.

If you want to be asked each time before opening the app:

  1. Say or type the voice action.
  2. Cancel by tapping  .
  3. Repeat a few times.

The app will no longer launch automatically. It will appear in search results again; in some cases, it will appear after a few minutes.

Where you can use voice search

These actions are available in English in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, Singapore, and South Africa.

Your device must have the Google app 4.0 or higher with Web & App Activity turned on.
